If there is a place permeated by mystery through and through, it is undoubtedly Prague. A city of magicians, alchemists and initiates. A wondrous place said to lie on the border of two realities, a true threshold, a gateway to another dimension.
It is said that a long time ago, a group of monks from India arrived, discovered the unique properties of the location, and built the first structures here to further enhance the ability to contact other worlds, and particularly the supernatural.
American author Dan Brown said that his fascination with Prague 'began with its deep history of mysticism and occultism. It's a labyrinth of mysterious places — the perfect setting for a Robert Langdon thriller — a city of secrets, both ancient and modern.'
And it truly is.
There are traces of fascinating secrets hidden in almost every corner in Prague. Fragments of long-gone events, echoes of a past full of mysteries and unexplained moments.
The world's largest castle is surrounded by hundreds of church towers. Narrow, winding streets full of dark corners and eerie shadows meander between ancient buildings on both sides of the Vltava River. And in the depths below them lies an amazing underground labyrinth, not just consisting of sewers and underground services, but also karst caves, old mines, crypts, ossuaries and once strictly guarded sanctuaries, where members of occult brotherhoods and magic sects performed their rituals.
What happened here over the ages?
Doctor Faust conspired with the devil in his house on the Cattle Market.
After the dissolution of their order, the Templars brought the most mysterious occult object of all time, the famous head of Baphomet, to Prague.
The Jewish ghetto was guarded by a giant Golem. According to legend, the clay creature, which was perhaps the first predecessor of humanoid robots, was brought to life by a magic formula.
Alchemists attempted to produce the elixir of life and create an artificial human, a homunculus, in secret laboratories.
The streets of the Old Town were plagued by repeated attacks by a hairy monster resembling a wild man. It appeared unexpectedly, emerging from the ground, and it disappeared just as suddenly.
The world's most mysterious manuscript, known today as the Voynich Manuscript, first appeared in the library of Emperor Rudolf II, and even the famous Devil's Bible was kept here at one time.
Prague isn't just a large reservoir of secrets, it hides the secret of all secrets.
