Beowulf is the largest surviving example of Old English poetry. The poem refers back to the killing of monsters in Scandinavia, but it views the battles with monsters as conflicts between good and evil. Thus, the first monster, Grendel, is described as ‘God’s enemy’. The poem contrasts human society, which is ordered and based on trust, with the terrors of the unknown world.
